If you are completing this training in a face to face group session you can use these suggested activities and discussion points to help facilitate and to reflect on the content.

Give out the attached message cards between two people and have the attached symbol sheets available. Then ask people to share their message without words, just use the available symbols, or objects and photos to out try using different visual supports to communicate your message. You could also try using sign, gestures and or just eye pointing.
This is a good opportunity to discuss how difficult communication is when you don’t have access to the right visuals. How we will use a total communication approach to get our message across.

When watching the case study on the next page it can be helpful to pause between each attempt to understand what the actor is saying. This will help you to highlight that to begin with we can only guess what the person is saying by the tone of her voice. We then use facial expressions and body language, followed by using the environment and then finally from the use of a visual.
